After 25 years in academic and professional libraries, which included Stanford University in California, University of Auckland, New Zealand, the Institute of Chartered Accountants and Hatfield Polytechnic, Kate retired from employment as County Information Librarian for Hertfordshire in 1992.

Continuing in information work on a freelance basis, she also established an English language and cultural induction service for foreign speaking professional people.  

‍HOMESTAY HERTFORDSHIRE provided a network of hosts and teachers who offered individual language tuition and introduction to the English way of life with St Albans as an exemplar of Englishness.

Kate’s in-depth knowledge of the town and early modern English social history informed the service and led to a further career in publishing on aspects of local history.
